Berneck Castle

The origins of Berneck Castle are obscure, but its construction is attributed to the Lords of Berneck in the early 13th century. The first documentary mention dates back to 1225. Over the centuries, the castle frequently changed hands. After the extinction of the Lords of Berneck in the 14th century, it passed through various owners, including Sigmund von Anneberg, who took possession in 1415. Following a period of damage, likely during conflicts between the Annebergers and Duke Friedrich, the castle was extensively rebuilt and expanded in the 15th century under Hans Wilhelm von Mülinen, becoming one of the largest and most beautiful structures in the region. Emperor Maximilian exchanged the castle for Tratzberg Castle in 1499. Later, in 1775, the Pach family carried out a renovation, and in 1819, they restored the complex as a summer residence. From 1870 onwards, a gradual decay set in, accelerating rapidly in the 20th century. Only the acquisition by architect Ekkehard Hörmann in 1976 and the subsequent restoration work from 1977 to 1983 saved Berneck from ultimate ruin.
