Birgel Castle, a moated castle, is in Birgel, a district of Düren in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a four-winged complex made of quarry stone and now serves as a school.

History+

The first documented mention of the Birgel family occurred in 1271. In 1301, Count Gerhard I of Jülich exchanged the castle. After changes of ownership, the complex came into the possession of the "von der Ehren" family in 1580. Their son built the current moated castle at the beginning of the 17th century, after the previous building had been severely damaged by war. In the 19th century, the castle passed into the possession of the Schoeller family, before Max Schoeller sold it to Baron von Diergardt in 1913.
