Bled Castle, a prominent medieval structure, majestically perches on a rock above Lake Bled in Slovenia. It is considered the oldest castle in the country and offers an impressive sight that captivates visitors.

History+

The first documented mention of Bled Castle dates back to May 22, 1011, when Emperor Henry II granted it to the Bishops of Brixen. For several centuries, the castle remained in the possession of the Diocese of Brixen. In 1278, the fortress, located in the March of Carniola, came under the rule of the House of Habsburg, thus becoming part of Austria. In 1838, the castle changed hands again, sold to Viktor Ruardu, owner of the Jesenice ironworks. After several subsequent sales, Bled Castle finally became state property in 1937. The oldest preserved part of the complex is a Romanesque tower. Earthquakes in 1511 and 1690 affected the region, causing damage to the castle. Consequently, additional towers were built, and the fortifications were strengthened. Later additions date from the Renaissance period. A chapel located in the upper courtyard, dating from the 16th century, was restored and adorned with frescoes in the 17th century.

Bled Castle is situated in the town of Bled, in the Gorenjska (Upper Carniola) region of western Slovenia (Zahodna Slovenija). It stands at an elevation of approximately 575 meters above sea level.
