In the town of Blomberg in North Rhine-Westphalia, Blomberg Castle stands on a hill. Originally conceived as a defensive structure, it evolved into a residence and continues to shape the townscape today.

History+

It is believed that Blomberg Castle was jointly erected in the 13th century by the Lords of Lippe and the Counts of Schwalenberg and Sternberg as a fortress. Simon I (1275–1344) later chose Blomberg as his residence and had the complex expanded into a stately home. He and his successors used the castle alternately with Brake Castle. After destruction during the Soest Feud (1414–1463), it was rebuilt as a two-story, three-wing complex. For a time, it again served as a residence for the Lords of Lippe.
