Bodenheim Castle

The first indications of a noble estate in Bodenheim date back to around 950, with a motte believed to be its origin. A family named von Bodenheim was first mentioned in a document in 1136. A feudal register from 1312 names Adolphus de Bodenem as the owner of the castrum. After the Bodenheim family died out in 1377, the castle passed to Johann von Vischenich and around 1400 to the Brent von Vernich family. This era ended around 1480, and the von Tomberg genannt Worms family, connected to the Brents by marriage, inhabited the castle. Dietrich von Tomberg rebuilt the castle around 1589 after it had been plundered and burned, constructing the east wing and the current castle gate.
