Bodenteich Castle

Around 1250, Burg Bodenteich was established as the ancestral seat of the noble family von Badendieck or Bodendike. From the 14th century until the 19th century, the Dukes of Lüneburg utilized the castle as an official residence for regional administration. After its destruction during the Hildesheim Diocesan Feud around 1520, the current castle buildings were reconstructed. Archaeological finds on the castle mound, including pottery fragments from the 9th to 10th centuries, suggest earlier settlement. In the cellar of a former half-timbered building, remains of a stone tower with an eight-meter diameter and two-meter thick fieldstone walls were discovered, attributed to the 13th century. The keep from the 14th century, a brick tower with 3.5-meter thick walls, once served as a prison and granary.
