Botzlar Castle
Botzlar Castle in Selm, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a remnant of a former moated castle.
History+
The origins of Botzlar Castle are presumed to be in connection with the conversion of Cappenberg Castle into a Premonstratensian monastery in 1122. It was likely intended to serve as a protective castle for the town of Selm. The complex was first documented in 1282. Its former owners included the Lords of Meinhövel and Velen. The castle was surrounded by several moats, the innermost of which was filled in only in the 1960s. Botzlar had its own manorial court, which merged with the episcopal Gogericht in Werne in the 15th century. In 2013, a civic foundation acquired the castle from the city of Selm.
