Bourheim Castle

A farm in “Burnheim” was first mentioned in a property register in 1234, though it was an unfortified agricultural estate at that time. Only later was this farmstead fortified with strong walls. Heinrich von Bourheim fought in the Battle of Worringen in 1288 on the side of the Archbishop of Cologne, indicating a feudal relationship with the Electorate of Cologne. In the early 15th century, the estate belonged to Alart von Linzenich, and later to Loes von Linzenich, whose family were vassals of the Dukes of Jülich. Through marriage, the castle passed to Dietrich von Eys, also known as Beusdael, in 1501. In the 17th century, the von Friemersdorf zu Pützfeld family became owners, before the castle came into the possession of Aegidius von Hafften in 1665 through marriage. His daughter Anna brought it to the family of her second husband Wolfgang from the Wildenburg line of the Counts of Hatzfeld in the 18th century. In 1771, the property was acquired by the family of the Counts von Fürstenberg-Stammheim. During World War II, the castle suffered significant damage during the fighting on the Rur front. Today, it is owned by the von Lünnick family.
