Brüggen Castle is a moated castle that once secured a ford across the Schwalm river in the municipality of Brüggen in North Rhine-Westphalia. It now serves as a cultural center and museum.

History+

The origins of Brüggen Castle date back to the 13th century, when the Counts of Kessel built it to secure a river crossing. In the early 14th century, the complex passed into the possession of the Dukes of Jülich, who replaced the existing structures with a brick castle. Its history was marked by conflicts, including its storming and looting by Burgundian troops in 1473 and a plunder by Geldrian soldiers in 1474. Despite these destructions, the castle was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded, including with bastions to adapt to gunpowder weapons.
