Bubenheim Castle
Bubenheim Castle is located near Rommelsheim in the Düren district of North Rhine-Westphalia. The lowland castle is situated on a wooded island in the otherwise treeless Börde landscape, about one kilometer south of Rommelsheim. It is in close proximity to the route of the Coronation Road from Frankfurt to Aachen. Next to the castle with its manor farm is another settlement, Gut Bubenheim, and about 500 meters away is the Bubenheim stop of the Bördebahn.
In 1377, the castle was mentioned as property of the Spies von Büllesheim family, and a branch of the family, Spies von Büllesheim zu Bubenheim (Bobbenheim), was formed. In 1699, Philippina Isabella Clara Spies zu Büllesheim und Bubenheim, a former canoness in Gerresheim, married Baron Johann Franz von Berghe genannt Trips, transferring ownership to this family. He was an ancestor of the former Formula 1 driver Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips. In 1757, the castle was sold to a Jülich citizen, the tanner Zantis. After several changes of ownership, the estate came into the possession of the Barons von Nellessen from Aachen in 1878. Since 1935, the Schmitz-Peiffer family has owned the castle. The castle was named "Castle of the Month" in 2002.
Current Use+
In the last century, the castle was used as an agricultural estate. Today, agriculture is only a secondary occupation.
The younger generation discovered a market niche. In the largely renovated main building, weddings, company parties, etc., can be celebrated in a medieval knightly setting. A play area is available for children from near and far, meaning various rooms can be rented for events. The Bubenheim Playland, with play equipment, a 3,000 m² indoor play hall, and a corn maze, is well-known far beyond the Rhineland.
Layout+
The castle complex consists of the main castle and the western outer bailey, which, after many alterations, is hardly recognizable as such. On the west and north sides of the former knight's seat, remnants of the rampart, still about ten meters wide and up to 2.6 meters high, which lay directly in front of the moats, are preserved.
The former castle chapel, dedicated to Saint Nicholas, had to be demolished in 1883 due to dilapidation and was not rebuilt.
Gut Bubenheim+
Immediately west of the castle and partly integrated into the castle's wooded island, there is a farm. After the residential building of the estate was newly built in 2008, the old house next to it, probably dating from the Middle Ages, could be completely demolished. The farm is used for agriculture.
