Burggrumbach Castle

The castle was probably built in the 12th century by the Lords of Grumbach. After the Grumbach family died out in 1242, ownership passed to the Counts of Rieneck in 1243. In 1328, the Würzburg imperial ministerial family of Wolfskeel bought the castle, and from then on called themselves Lords of Grumbach. From 1569 to 1593, the castle belonged to Kunz von Grumbach. The Lords of Grumbach, who were involved in the raids of Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades during the Margrave War, were partly responsible, under Wilhelm von Grumbach, for the murder of the Würzburg Bishop Melchior Zobel. The imperial ban was subsequently imposed on the Grumbach family. Their property, including the castle, was incorporated by the Würzburg Prince-Bishopric in 1593. In 1623, Friedrich von Thüngen received the property as a fief.
