Buschdorf Castle

The Buschdorf Castle was an old knight's seat, first mentioned in a document in 1217, whose task was to secure the path between Bonn and Aachen. This path, later called the "Aachener Weg" (Aachen Way), was important because a lot of trade and many troop movements of the armies of that time took place along it. To protect this path, the castle was equipped with moats and two-meter-thick walls, which could have repelled almost any enemy.

However, not much of this castle remains today. A fire in 1874 destroyed large parts of the castle. The only thing left of the former castle is the tower, which, however, is said to have been taller in the past. In addition, the large moats were filled in and a park was created, which now surrounds the castle. Nevertheless, many structural changes can still be seen on the tower, which were made in various epochs, such as the Baroque period.

The castle also includes a castle cross, which stands a little further along the "Aachener Weg" between two lime trees. According to the inscription, it was erected in 1880 by Josef and Peter Frings, the then residents of Buschdorf Castle. The reason why it was erected is not known. It probably marked then, as it does today, the border between the cities of Bonn and Bornheim.
