Calvörde Castle
Calvörde Castle is located in the municipality of the same name in Saxony-Anhalt. Its strategically important position at the border of three territories – Brandenburg, Magdeburg, and Braunschweig – made it a coveted and often contested object.
History+
First documented in the late 13th century, Calvörde Castle was originally owned by the Counts of Hillersleben before passing to the Harz Counts of Regenstein through inheritance. Its position at the southern end of the once impassable swamp areas of the Drömling, where it controlled the Ohre crossing of an important trade route, gave it significance. Numerous noble families, including the von Bartensleben, Alvensleben, and von Schulenburg, played a decisive role in this border region. After the Alvensleben, who likely acquired the lordship through marriage, the von Schulenburg took over the mortgaged property in 1542.
