Dagestein Castle

The origins of Dagestein Castle are not fully clear, but the first documentary mentions date back to the late 12th century. In 1185, Vilseck was mentioned as part of the possessions of the Bamberg Prince-Bishopric. A Megelaus von Dagestein appeared in a document in 1205, and after the extinction of this family, later lords of the castle adopted the name of the town of Vilseck. In the 15th century, the castle was converted into a moated castle. During a feud in 1512, it was plundered and set on fire, but subsequently rebuilt. In 1552, the complex, which at that time primarily served as a granary and prison, fell into the hands of Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades of Bayreuth. Around 1730, extensive new constructions took place, and in the course of secularization, parts of the castle were sold to citizens of Vilseck in 1802. Between 1796 and 1797, the robber captain Franz Troglauer was imprisoned here for several months.
