Dalbenden Castle (Urft)

Dalbenden Castle ("Benden"=meadows) in the Eifel is a castle complex founded in the 12th century.
Starting from the original Dalbenden Castle (today's stair tower with the square castle behind it), the castle, which was then completely surrounded by moats, was expanded during the 16th century (today's castle courtyard, coachman's house, moat house) and in the 18th century (today's castle park, hunter's and forester's house).
During the Second World War, Dalbenden Castle was the headquarters of the General Staff of the 67th Army Corps under General O. Hitzfeld. At the end of 1944, Field Marshal v. Rundstedt directed the Ardennes Offensive from Dalbenden Castle. On December 18, 1944, the castle was bombed by the American Air Force and partially severely damaged.
Despite all the adversities of history, Dalbenden Castle today, after sensitive renovation from the ground up, is a place that breathes history.
