History+
As early as the 14th century, a castle existed on this site, owned by the Counts of Berg. A document from 1404 mentions a joint construction in Denklingen, whose ownership was clarified between Duke Adolf of Berg and Young Count Gerhard of Sayn. In 1413, Duke Adolf handed over the house of Denklingen to Johann von Gimborn as an "Offenhaus" (open house), meaning the Duke could use the castle if needed. In 1423, Engelbert von Scheidt was enfeoffed with the castle. Duke Adolf referred to the complex as "our castle" in 1433 and pledged it to Wilhelm von Nesselrode in 1435.
