Deutschlandsberg Castle

The origins of settlement on the castle hill date back to the Neolithic Age, with finds from the Lasinjak culture and the Retz-Gajary culture. Fortifications also existed here during the Hallstatt and Roman periods. Around 970, Emperor Otto I donated the area to the Archbishopric of Salzburg. In the early 12th century, a stone main tower was likely built under Archbishop Konrad I and handed over to the ministerial family of Lonsberg. The castle was first documented as "castrum Lonsperch" in 1185. In 1292, the Landsberger Bund was founded here, an uprising against Duke Albrecht I. After a fire in the 13th century, the castle was rebuilt in Gothic style in the 14th century, and the tower was restored. Following an occupation by Matthias Corvinus in the 15th century, the Salzburg archbishops regained the castle and refortified it. The castle chapel was rebuilt in the late 16th century and completed in 1607. In 1532, the complex withstood an attack by the Turks. After numerous alterations, the castle became state property in 1803, changed hands several times, and was acquired by the municipality of Deutschlandsberg in 1932. The name "Deutschlandsberg" derives from a Slavic word for a clearing, with "Deutsch-" added in the 19th century to distinguish it from a Slovenian locality.
