Dohna Castle

The Castle can be visited

Dohna Castle, once a double castle and ancestral seat of the Burgraves of Dohna, is located in the town of Dohna in Saxony. Although only minor remains of the spur castle are preserved today, it served as a strategically important point on an ancient trade route to Bohemia.

History+

Dohna Castle was presumably built around 950 AD under Otto I on the Schlossberg, on the site of an earlier Sorbian fortification. It was first documented in 1040 in the context of conflicts between King Henry III and Duke Břetislav of Bohemia. The castle changed hands multiple times, including Bohemian burgraves and Wiprecht von Groitzsch. After its destruction in the early 12th century, it was rebuilt under Duke Vladislav I of Bohemia. The castle also served as a state prison. Henry I, Burggrave of Dohna, is considered the progenitor of the family that ruled the castle for about 250 years.
