Esbeck Castle

Esbeck Castle was first documented in 1263 when the Bishop of Halberstadt granted the fortress, acquired from Ludolf von Esbeck, as a fief to Margrave Johann of Brandenburg. By 1322, the castle was owned by Duke Otto the Mild. Between 1346 and 1368, the castle was repeatedly pledged by Duke Magnus I, as recorded in the feudal register of the Dukes of Brunswick. Among the pledgees were families such as the von Bartensleben, the von dem Knesebeck, and the von der Asseburg. In 1371, Duke Magnus I granted the city of Brunswick the right to demolish Esbeck Castle.
