Esztergom Castle
Esztergom Castle is a historic hillfort in Hungary, distinguished by its strategic location on the Danube and its central role in the Ottoman history of the region.
History+
Esztergom Castle fell to the Ottomans in August 1543, led by Süleyman I, becoming part of the Buda region. In 1594, a large coalition of German, Polish, and Venetian troops besieged the castle. Despite the numerical inferiority of the defenders, led by Sokolluzade Lala Mehmed Pasha, the Ottomans were forced to surrender due to hunger and thirst. Just eleven years later, in September 1605, Sokolluzade Lala Mehmed Pasha, who had become a vizier, recaptured the castle after a 30-day siege. Following the failed second siege of Vienna in 1683, the Holy League was formed, completely liberating Hungary from Ottoman rule.
