Esztergom Castle
Esztergom Castle, a historic hillfort in Hungary, played a central role in the Ottoman history of the region.
In August 1543, Esztergom Castle fell to the Ottomans, led by Süleyman I, becoming part of the Buda region. In 1594, a coalition of German, Polish, and Venetian troops besieged the castle. Despite the numerical inferiority of the defenders, led by Sokolluzade Lala Mehmed Pasha, the Ottomans were forced to surrender due to hunger and thirst. Eleven years later, in September 1605, Sokolluzade Lala Mehmed Pasha, who had become a vizier, recaptured the castle after a 30-day siege. Following the failed second siege of Vienna in 1683, the Holy League was formed, completely liberating Hungary from Ottoman rule.
Esztergom Castle is located in the city of Esztergom, in Komárom-Esztergom County, within the Közép-Dunántúl (Central Transdanubia) region of Hungary. It stands at an elevation of approximately 135 meters above sea level.
