Falkenstein Castle

The castle's origins date back to 1074 when Bishop Tuto of the Prince-Bishopric of Regensburg fortified the granite rock to protect the eastern territory of the bishopric. The first documentary mentions of Rudolf and Otto von Valchenstein date from 1129/1130. Around 1150, the keep was erected. At the end of the 12th century, the castle passed to the Counts of Bogen. After their extinction in 1242, the Wittelsbach family inherited the property, but ownership was complex, leading to its return to the Prince-Bishopric of Regensburg. Later, Falkenstein came into the possession of the Hohenfels family, who were involved in numerous feuds. In 1323, Heinrich von Hohenfels-Falkenstein was forced to sell the castle to King Ludwig IV, who passed it on to Landgrave Ulrich von Leuchtenberg in 1327.
