Falkenstein Castle, a medieval hilltop castle, is located in the town of Falkenstein/Harz in Saxony-Anhalt. It is characterized by its well-preserved structure and, due to its strategically favorable location, was never conquered.

History+

The origins of Falkenstein Castle date back to between 1120 and 1180. Its construction is, according to legend, closely linked to a tragic event: after a fatal dispute between Egeno II of Konradsburg and Count Adalbert II of Ballenstedt around 1080, in which Adalbert was killed, the murderer's ancestral seat was to be converted into a monastery. Thereupon, Egeno's son, Burchard of Konradsburg, had the new Falkenstein Castle built.
