Forchtenstein Castle

The origins of Forchtenstein Castle date back to the early 15th century, when the first part, including a 50-meter-high keep, was constructed by the Lords of Mattersdorf. After this family died out around 1450, the castle came into the possession of the Habsburgs for about 170 years, who occasionally pledged it to other noble families. A significant turning point occurred in 1622 when Nikolaus Esterházy received the castle in exchange from Emperor Ferdinand II and began transforming the dilapidated structure into a fortress. Under his leadership and that of his son Paul, who continued the work in the second half of the 17th century, the castle was redesigned into a Baroque castle by Italian master builders such as Simon Retacco and Domenico Carlone. After Paul's death, the castle's function shifted from a fortress to a secure repository for weapons, archives, and the extensive princely collection, including the famous Treasury and Chamber of Wonders, accessible only via a secret passage. Further extensions and renovations were carried out in the late 18th century under master builder Johann Ferdinand Mödlhammer.

Forchtenstein Castle is located in the municipality of Forchtenstein in the Mattersburg district, Burgenland, Austria. It stands at an elevation of approximately 501 m above sea level.

Today, Forchtenstein Castle remains in the private ownership of the Esterházy family. It serves as an important museum showcasing the history and treasures of the Esterházy noble family. The Treasury and Chamber of Wonders, which remained intact, is a particular attraction for visitors.
