In Arnsberg-Neheim-Hüsten in the Hochsauerland district, North Rhine-Westphalia, is Freseken Castle, originally a knight's residence. This building, erected on the remains of the city wall, today serves as a venue for cultural events.

History+

The origins of Freseken Castle date back to the 1360s, when it was built as part of the reinforcement of Neheim's fortifications during armed conflicts between the County of Arnsberg and the County of Mark. Together with the Schüngelschen Burghaus, it secured the western city gate. In 1377, the sovereign Friedrich III granted the estate to the knight Wilhelm Freyseken. After its destruction by Swedish-Hessian troops in 1633, Ferdinand Lothar von Bönnighausen rebuilt it in 1688.
