The origins of Friedland Castle date back to the 13th century when it was built as a moated castle. Its first documented mention occurred in 1336. In 1518, the castle, along with the town and lordship of Friedland, initially came into the possession of the Order of St. John as collateral, which finally acquired it completely in 1533.
