Gaillenreuth Castle

The origins of Gaillenreuth Castle date back to 1122, when the Bamberg Bishop Otto I of Mistelbach acquired the complex for the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg. There is no confirmed knowledge about the original builders. A later mention in the legal book of the Bamberg Bishop Friedrich von Hohenlohe confirms that Bishop Leopold III of Bebenburg paid financial resources for the castle's maintenance to Konrad von Egloffstein in the 14th century. Between 1353 and 1359, the castle passed into the possession of the Lords of Egloffstein as an episcopal fief, with a part of it becoming their property. In 1522, Konrad XI of Egloffstein again enfeoffed the free part of the castle to Bishop Georg III of Limpurg. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was burned down but rebuilt by Konz von Egloffstein. Further destruction occurred in 1632 during the Thirty Years' War by Croatian troops. Afterwards, only the southern part of the castle was rebuilt.
