Gatersleben Castle, a partially preserved moated castle, is situated on the northern edge of Gatersleben, a district of the town of Seeland in the Salzlandkreis.

History+

The origins of Gatersleben Castle are presumed to be in the 9th century, built by the Lords of Gatersleben. As early as 964, it was mentioned as a circular castle surrounded by moats. Between 1179 and 1183, the complex underwent an expansion with the addition of a rectangular keep, commissioned by the Bishop of Halberstadt, who also used the castle for summer synods. In the 13th century, a knight's hall was added, followed by an additional story with loopholes in 1460. The castle received its current roof in 1693.
