Gebhardshagen Castle

The complex was first documented in 1186 as Hagen Castle. Originally situated on the eastern edge of the Salzgitter mountain range, it controlled a military and trade route. In 1406, the castle suffered damage during the Lichtenberg Bedestreit but was rebuilt. From the 16th century, it served as a ducal court and administrative seat. During the Thirty Years' War, it was again destroyed and rebuilt in the second half of the 17th century. After losing its military significance, the castle was used as an agricultural estate from the mid-17th century until 1986. Since 1986, the complex has been owned by the city of Salzgitter and is managed by a support association.
