Geilenkirchen Castle, a former moated castle, is situated on the banks of the Wurm in the town of the same name. Its history is closely linked to the securing of an important ford and the Roman road. Today, it houses a grammar school.

History+

The Counts of Heinsberg had Geilenkirchen Castle built in the 12th century. Its strategic purpose was to guard a ford across the Wurm, which lay on the Roman road between Aachen and Roermond. After its destruction in 1945, the remaining parts of the castle were integrated into the St. Ursula Episcopal Grammar School.
