In the west of Gemünden's old town center, Burg Gemünden rises, a structure dating back to the early 13th century. Its square shape with a rounded southwest corner makes it a structure of medieval architecture in the region.

History+

The construction of Burg Gemünden took place at the beginning of the 13th century under the aegis of the Counts of Ziegenhain. In 1450, the complex, along with the entire County of Ziegenhain, passed into the possession of the Landgraves of Hesse. After various periods of destruction, the castle was last rebuilt in 1648 and subsequently expanded multiple times in the following decades. Between 1985 and 1995, the entire complex underwent restoration.
