Gniew Castle, once a significant Teutonic Order castle, stands majestically in the city of the same name in the Pomeranian region of Poland. Its strategic location on the Vistula River made it an important control point and an impressive testament to medieval architecture.

History+

The city of Mewe was founded by the Teutonic Order in 1276. Just a few years later, starting in 1283, construction of the castle began. The square brick structure with an inner courtyard and sides measuring approximately 47 meters was built at the mouth of the Ferse River, protecting the city from the river. Originally, three slender towers flanked the cube, with a keep measuring 12.5 meters in diameter standing in place of a northern tower. In 1466, the castle came under Polish rule. After the Partition of Poland in 1772, it was converted into a barracks, and from 1803, it served as a magazine, during which Gothic vaults were demolished and arched windows bricked up. In the mid-19th century, the castle underwent a romantic-era restoration while housing a prison; during this time, the keep was partially demolished and made to resemble the other towers. After a fire in 1921 and further destruction in World War II, reconstruction began in 1967 by a local company, which was continued and completed by the municipality after 1992.
