Greifenstein Castle, a hilltop castle in Lower Austria, stands on a rock above the Danube. Its strategic location on the southern steep bank of the Vienna Woods once made it an important part of the defense line along the river.

History+

The origins of Greifenstein Castle likely date back to the 11th century, with its first documented mention occurring in 1135. Ownership frequently changed. From the 16th century, the castle served as an ecclesiastical prison. After a period of decay from around 1770, Johann I of Liechtenstein acquired the complex and had it restored between 1807 and 1808 in the Romantic style, incorporating older structural elements.
