Greifenstein Castle

Archaeological finds and structural elements suggest the existence of Greifenstein Castle as early as the 12th century, possibly initially as a simple fortification. A documentary mention from 1137, using the name “Greifenstein,” is now considered a forgery, as the name only became common in the 17th century. The oldest credible mention, referring to the castle as “Blankenburg,” dates from between 1196 and 1210. By 1208 at the latest, the complex belonged to the County of Schwarzburg. In the 13th century, the castle lost importance in favor of Schwarzburg Castle, which became the main residence. In the 14th century, the complex was expanded, including a round tower, a chapel, and other buildings.
