Gruttenstein Castle

Gruttenstein Castle was probably built around 800 by the Counts of Plain. The county resided in the castle until 1218. For a long time, it served to protect the city and its salt deposits. A siege in 1266 during the war between Duke Heinrich of Lower Bavaria and King Ottokar of Bohemia caused partial destruction by fire.

In the 14th century, the castle was again destroyed due to numerous feuds. It finally burned down in 1585. Duke Wilhelm V eventually had it rebuilt and made it the official residence of the Electoral Administrator until 1763.

From the mid-19th century, it served the city of Bad Reichenhall as a poorhouse for the saltworks and also accommodated the saltworks workers of that time.
