Gudenau Castle (Villip)

Gudenau Castle is a two-part moated castle near Villip in the municipality of Wachtberg in the Rhein-Sieg district.

It originated in the early 13th century and received its current appearance in the 17th/18th century.

Around 1560, the four-winged main castle with a large park at the rear was expanded, in keeping with the times, for example with a Gothic oriel and curved domes. One of the four round corner towers has a pointed slate roof, the roofs of the other three corner towers are Baroque.

A bailey with a five-story gate tower, a slated hip roof, and an octagonal clock turret stands at the front of the castle.

The garden, staggered in three terraces, was designed in the 17th century with Italian influences. It is the only preserved private Baroque garden in the Rhineland.

Until about 50 years ago, Gudenau was owned by the Neven du Mont family. Now, however, the castle belongs to the Counts of Strasoldo.
