Gutenberg Castle

Archaeological findings confirm that the castle hill was already settled in the Neolithic period and served as a cult site. Later, dry stone walls from the Iron Age and Roman wall remains were discovered, indicating early strategic importance. In the 12th century, the construction of the actual castle began, initially with a curtain wall and later a castle tower. In the 13th century, the castle was owned by the Lords of Frauenberg before passing to the Habsburgs in 1314, who used it as a watchpost. During the Swabian War in 1499, the castle was besieged, and under Emperor Maximilian I, extensive construction work was carried out to repair damage and strengthen defenses. After a fire in the village of Balzers in 1795, the castle fell into ruin as its stones were used for the reconstruction of the village. The municipality of Balzers acquired the ruin in 1824. Between 1905 and 1912, the castle was extensively rebuilt by the painter and architect Egon Rheinberger. After several changes of ownership, the Principality of Liechtenstein bought the castle in 1979.

Gutenberg Castle is accessible to visitors. The outer bailey can be visited all year round. Following renovations in 2010, the castle chapel and the rose garden are also freely accessible on Sundays from 10 AM to 7 PM. The castle now serves as a venue for cultural events such as concerts.
