Hardegg Castle

The first documented mention of Hardegg dates back to 1145, although a smaller defensive structure already existed. Originally owned by the Counts of Plain and Hardegg, the castle changed hands multiple times after their lineage died out. Under the Magdeburg-Hardeggs, the complex underwent expansion with the construction of a tower, a palas, and a chapel, elevating it to one of the largest structures of its kind in the country. It served as the administrative center of the Hardegg County, which is traceable from 1294 and even became immediate imperial territory by the end of the 15th century. Following the death of the childless Michael Imperial Count of Hardegg, the castle passed to the Habsburgs, who in 1499 transferred it to the Prüschenk brothers. They were appointed Imperial Counts of Hardegg and later acquired the County of Glatz.
