The ruins of Hattenheim Castle are located in the center of Hattenheim, a district of Eltville am Rhein. The four-story residential tower, with its tall chimney and stepped gables, is striking.

History+

The origins of Hattenheim Castle likely date back to around 1118, with the assumption that a smaller fortification existed before the construction of the current residential tower. The complex was probably once surrounded by a moat, which may have been fed by the nearby Leimenbach stream. The first known owners were the "Nobles of Hattenheim". A confirmed ownership history begins in 1411 when the castle passed into the possession of the Barons Langwerth von Simmern. For about 300 years, the castle served as the residence and ancestral seat of this family until they moved to the Stockheimer Hof in Eltville in 1711.
