Heidenreichstein Castle, a moated castle, rises in Lower Austria, approximately 17 kilometers northeast of Gmünd. Its appearance on a slightly elevated rock outcrop, surrounded by moats, high walls, and towers, is an example of medieval architecture in the region.

History+

Construction of Heidenreichstein Castle began around 1190 under Burgrave Heidenreich von Gars. The oldest part of the complex, the keep, is dated to around 1160. In the 15th century, the castle was besieged by followers of Jan Hus and rebellious peasants during the Hussite Wars. However, the attackers were unable to capture the fortress. Most of the outbuildings were added between the 15th and 16th centuries.
