Heimerzheim Castle

Heimerzheim Castle is a castle on the southern edge of Heimerzheim in the North Rhine-Westphalian Rhein-Sieg district. It embodies the type of two-part castle complex and is one of the best-preserved in the Swisttal valley. Consisting of an outer bailey and the main house, it is surrounded by wide moats.

The castle was founded at the latest in the middle of the 13th century by the Lords of Heimerzheim. The knightly family owned it until 1324, when the castle became the seat of a commandery through the sale by Knight Wennemar von Heimerzheim to the Teutonic Order.

In the following centuries, it changed noble owners several times, until it finally came into the possession of the family of the Electoral Cologne minister Count Caspar Anton von Belderbusch in the 18th century. Through the marriage of Josephine von Belderbusch to her cousin Baron Karl von Boeselager, Heimerzheim, along with the neighboring Schillingscapellen Monastery, came into the possession of the Boeselager family, originally from the Magdeburg Börde, where it remains to this day.

The resistance fighters Georg and Philipp Freiherr von Boeselager, who were involved in the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944, came from Heimerzheim Castle.
