Heistard Castle

Heistard Castle, also known as Holzheim, Heistartburg, is a moated castle in the Holzheim district of Mechernich.

The first mention of the lowland castle dates back to 1333. However, the remains still preserved today were probably only built from 1486 onwards. The manor house was rebuilt in the 15th/16th century, the gate tower, demolished in 1846, in the 17th century, and the farm buildings were extended in the 17th and 18th centuries. Work continued on the east wing into the 19th century. The castle, with its rectangular layout, has an outer moat and an additional rampart on the west and south sides. There are loopholes in the outer walls. A 14-meter-high, four-story round tower made of quarry stone in the north corner has been preserved.
