In the Winterscheid district of the municipality of Ruppichteroth in the Rhein-Sieg district, Herrenstein Castle is located on a rocky cone in the Bröl Valley.

History+

The origins of Herrenstein Castle date back to around 1300, when a fortified house belonging to the Lords vam Steyne (vom Stein) was built on this site. The first documented mention as “huys zome Steyne” occurred in 1370, when Johann von Stein received the property as a fief from Count Wilhelm II of Berg. Around 1800, extensive demolition and reconstruction work, along with further measures in the 19th century, shaped its current appearance. Since 1436, the castle has been owned by the noble Nesselrode family, whose descendants still reside there today.
