Ein Vorgängerbau wird 1279 erstmalig erwähnt. Um 1300 errichteten die Grafen von Sponheim die Burg. Im 16. Jahrhundert erfolgte ein Umbau. 1737 stürzte die Burg teilweise ein und wurde 1742 wieder errichtet.
