In the municipality of Vöhl, on the edge of the Kellerwald forest, stands Hessenstein Castle. Originally built as a replacement, it now serves as a youth hostel and conference center.

History+

The construction of Hessenstein Castle took place between 1328 and 1342 under Landgrave Heinrich II of Hesse. It was built on the foundations of the former “Silburg” and was intended to serve as a new administrative seat for the local bailiffs, after Keseburg Castle had been destroyed by his father in 1277. In 1348, due to pressure from the Archbishop of Mainz, the castle was pledged to Haina Monastery. In the following centuries, various castellans, lords of the castle, and counts resided at the complex.
