Hirschhorn Castle, a well-preserved hillside castle and palace complex, stands above the town of Hirschhorn in Hesse. Located on a spur of the Stöckberg, it offered control over the Neckar Valley as well as the entrances to the Finkenbach and Ulfenbach valleys.

History+

Hirschhorn Castle was founded around 1260 by Johann von Hirschhorn, who adopted the castle's name from 1270 onwards. It is believed that he was the grandson or son of a union between the noble lords of Steinach and the ministerials of Hirschberg. The canting coat of arms with the stag's antler was adopted from the maternal Hirschberg family and gave the castle its name. In the 14th century, with the rise of the Lords of Hirschhorn, the complex was expanded.
