Hohenbregenz Castle

The origins of Hohenbregenz Castle date back to the late 11th century, when it was built by the Counts of Bregenz, even before 1097. Its first documented mention was in 1209. In 1143 it passed to the Counts of Pfullendorf, before falling to Count Palatine Hugo of Tübingen in 1170. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Habsburgs acquired the complex in two parts and used it as a seat for Austrian bailiffs. In the early 17th century, it was expanded into a fortress. In 1647, during the Thirty Years' War, the fortress was captured by Swedish troops and destroyed by explosions in the same year.
