Hohensolms Castle

Around 1350, the Counts of Solms erected Hohensolms Castle to replace Alt-Hohensolms Castle, which had been destroyed the previous year. In 1356 and 1363, the complex suffered partial damage due to conflicts with the imperial city of Wetzlar. After the extinction of the Solms-Burgsolms line in the early 15th century, the castle passed to Count Bernhard II of Solms-Braunfels. A renewed division in 1420 brought the castle into the possession of the Lords of Solms-Lich. In the mid-16th century, Count Reinhard I of Solms-Lich had the castle converted into a palace. When the Counts of Solms-Lich split into several lines in 1579, Hohensolms became the residence of the Counts of Solms-Hohensolms.
