Hohenzollern Castle, a hilltop castle, is on a mountain cone in Baden-Württemberg. It is the ancestral seat of the former ruling House of Hohenzollern and an example of Neo-Gothic architecture in Germany.

History+

The origins of the first medieval castle date back to the 11th century, with its first documented mention in 1267. In 1423, this first complex was destroyed after a siege by the Swabian League of Cities. A reconstruction began in 1454, but this second castle also fell to the Württembergers during the Thirty Years' War. After changing ownership, including periods under Habsburg and French occupation, the castle fell into disrepair from 1798 and was a ruin by the early 19th century. Only St. Michael's Chapel remained. The idea of rebuilding the castle again arose with Crown Prince Frederick William IV of Prussia in 1819.
