Homberg Castle
Homberg Castle, also known as Schloss Homberg, is an early medieval castle near Homberg (Ohm) in the Vogelsbergkreis in Hesse. The castle is located at an altitude of around 295 m above sea level on the so-called "Schlossberg".
In 1065, the castle and town were first mentioned in a document. The castle was documented a second time in 1146 as Hohunburch. In 1190, the castle was occupied by burgmannen until Homberg became a Hessian administrative seat in 1247.
During the Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648, the castle was destroyed by Swedish and Lower Hessian troops and the keep was blown up. In 1648, it was partially restored and renewed in 1836.
The rectangular castle complex consists of curtain walls and a pointed-arch castle gate with Romanesque imposts; the stables were also located here.
Within the inner castle area, which was delimited by a high keep, were the former three-story palas and a castle chapel dedicated to St. George.
