Horn Castle

The exact date of Horn Castle's construction is unknown, but it is presumed that initial parts of the complex were built around 1248 during the planned founding of the town of Horn and the construction of its city wall. The first documented mention occurred in 1326 as a 'stone house' in connection with a chapel dedicated to Mary. The completion of the castle is dated to 1348. It was built by nobleman Bernhard V zur Lippe as a defensive and residential complex. It served the later Counts zur Lippe as a residence, administrative building, widow's seat, granary, and even as a district prison. The castle and its owners were involved in several military conflicts, for example during the Soest Feud from 1444 to 1449.
